Petition Calls for Trump Admin to Appoint Musk as AI Adviser

An artificial intelligence (AI) advocacy group, Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI), is urging President-elect Trump to appoint billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk as a special adviser to the White House on AI. The petition, launched earlier this week, underscores Musk’s significant contributions to AI and calls him uniquely positioned to help the U.S. lead in advancing AI safely and securely.

Musk’s Role in Advancing Safe AI

ARI’s petition highlights Musk’s influence in both developing AI technology and advocating for AI safety. Known for his work with Tesla and his newly launched AI startup, xAI, Musk has maintained a commitment to advancing AI while warning about its risks. According to ARI, “No one is better equipped to help the Trump Administration make America lead on AI than Elon Musk.” Through Tesla’s autonomous driving technologies and xAI’s research initiatives, Musk has remained a critical figure in AI and a vocal advocate for responsible AI development.

Musk recently sued OpenAI, alleging that the AI startup departed from its original mission when it shifted to a for-profit structure. His criticisms reflect growing concerns about transparency and control in AI advancements, which are top priorities for ARI as well.

Push for Big Tech Regulation

In recent statements, Musk has advocated for regulatory bodies to oversee Big Tech’s AI activities, suggesting that companies must be held accountable for their AI products’ impact on society. ARI’s petition reinforces this view, stressing the need for federal insights into Big Tech to safeguard public interests. While the petition acknowledges that mechanisms should be in place to address conflicts of interest, it emphasizes that Musk’s experience and insights could guide AI policies in a way that balances innovation with ethical considerations.

Musk’s Support for AI Safety Legislation

The petition also draws attention to Musk’s support for California legislation aimed at regulating AI development. The California AI Safety Act, which Musk endorsed, would have required AI developers investing over $100 million to implement safety checks and cybersecurity measures. Although the bill passed through the California legislature, it was ultimately vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom, who expressed concern that targeting large developers may miss risks posed by smaller firms. Musk’s backing of this bill highlights his proactive stance on AI safety measures, even as the issue remains contentious.

Proposal for a Department of Government Efficiency

Beyond AI, Musk has proposed a Department of Government Efficiency that he would lead to identify and eliminate federal waste. He has supported this initiative for several months and promoted it as part of Trump’s agenda, which Musk endorsed prior to the 2024 election. The proposal suggests that Musk envisions a government structure that is both technologically advanced and economically streamlined.

Investor Concerns Over Musk’s Expanding Roles

Despite Musk’s vast influence, some Tesla investors have raised concerns about his focus being spread too thinly across multiple ventures. Earlier this year, a Delaware judge invalidated Musk’s $56 billion pay package at Tesla due to concerns about transparency and conflicts of interest. However, Tesla shareholders voted to reinstate the package, underscoring both the support and scrutiny Musk faces regarding his commitment to each of his roles. His involvement in additional advisory capacities at the White House could increase this dynamic further.
