OpenAI announced a new feature for ChatGPT, an AI conversational tool: Users can customize interactions by assigning particular traits and preferences. The feature brings a fresh interface to the custom instructions menu of ChatGPT, thereby making it even more intuitive and flexible for those seeking a more tailored experience.

Overhauled Customization Options

The latest update, announced by OpenAI on Friday, introduces a redesigned user interface that allows users to modify how ChatGPT communicates with them. This feature initially rolls out on ChatGPT.com and the Windows desktop app, with plans to expand to mobile and macOS desktop apps in the coming weeks.

OpenAI said that the new version of ChatGPT offers greater personalization: Users can now specify their preferred name or nickname, profession, and traits they would like ChatGPT to adopt during interactions. Suggested traits include descriptors like “Chatty,” “Encouraging,” and “Gen Z,” catering to diverse communication styles.

This update is notable in that it is not dependent on the memory feature of ChatGPT. Although the memory feature allows users to instruct ChatGPT to remember or forget specific details, the new customization menu focuses solely on conversation styles and tone.

Despite the commotion that characterized the release of this update, this feature remains not available in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland because it remains restricted due to regional limits. OpenAI is not giving out the timeline that they might need when they actually are going to enter these areas.

OpenAI disclosed that custom instructions will remain moderated for adhering to the organization’s usage term. That’s a measure meant to put some balance on customization and appropriate usage.

Leveraging Prompt Engineering for Increased Usability

Although the new menu seems like just a cosmetic update in usability, it utilizes the same fundamental technology: prompt engineering. Using the instructions inputted by users, the AI changes its response to better meet certain preferences so that the user can have an interaction that is more engaging and relevant.

This update is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to refine ChatGPT as its user base continues to grow. Recent additions like live web search and a “Canvas” interface for writing and coding projects demonstrate OpenAI’s commitment to expanding ChatGPT’s capabilities. As of December, over 300 million users engage with ChatGPT weekly, underscoring its widespread adoption and influence in the AI conversational space.
