Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and other AI assistants can significantly reduce teachers’ workloads by simplifying tasks such as lesson planning, grading, and creating personalized learning materials. To address this, OpenAI has partnered with Common Sense Media to launch a free online course for educators.
Course Overview
The course, titled “ChatGPT Foundations for K-12 Educators”, aims to help teachers responsibly and effectively integrate AI into their workflows.
“We’re in the early stages of AI adoption in K-12, and it will take all of us — educators, technologists, and organizations — working together to ensure this technology enables teachers and improves learning outcomes for students,” said Leah Belsky, VP and GM of Education at OpenAI.
This one-hour course covers foundational topics such as:
- Data privacy and its implications
- Ethical AI usage
- Fundamental AI concepts
- Practical strategies for leveraging AI in classrooms
The training is designed to be simple, accessible, and relevant beyond just ChatGPT, providing educators with a broader understanding of AI’s capabilities.
Early Success and Feedback
According to OpenAI, the course has already been piloted in over a dozen school districts with encouraging results. Notably, 98% of participants reported gaining new ideas or strategies to enhance their teaching workflows.
