Meta has rolled out a suite of highly-requested new features for Messenger Calling, aiming to enhance the calling experience and make communication more immersive, reliable, and fun.
Soon, users will be able to enjoy AI backgrounds for video calls, HD video calls, background noise suppression, video and audio voice messages, and hands-free calling and messaging with Siri.
Key Features for Messenger Calling
AI Backgrounds in Video Calls
Since September 2024, Meta has been enhancing its video calling features. Now, users can add a personalized AI background to their video calls, creating a more engaging or dynamic experience. To set your background, simply tap the “effects” icon in the sidebar during a video call and choose “Backgrounds.” This feature adds fun and flair to your calls, letting you reflect your mood or interests.
HD Video Calls and Noise Suppression
Messenger is upgrading its video calls with HD video quality, ensuring clearer, sharper visuals. This will be enabled by default for video calls made over Wi-Fi. For those on cellular data, HD can be manually activated by going to your call settings and turning on “Mobile data for HD video.”
Additionally, background noise suppression and voice isolation features will improve audio clarity, making digital communication feel more natural, even in noisy environments.
Audio and Video Voice Messages
Messenger Calling is also evolving to offer more versatile communication options. Users can now leave audio or video voice messages when their friends can’t answer. Simply tap the “Record message” button to send a message in audio or video form after an unanswered call.
Hands-Free Calling and Messaging with Siri
For hands-free communication, Messenger now works with Siri. Whether your hands are full or your phone is out of reach, simply ask Siri to send a message or make a call via Messenger. Try saying, “Hey Siri, send a message to Cassandra on Messenger,” and dictate the message without touching your phone.

With more than 7 billion minutes spent on Messenger and Facebook calls daily across the globe, these new features will make the Messenger Calling experience more enjoyable and efficient.
